Disability insurance provides income replacement if you develop a short- or long-term disability and you are unable to perform your normal work duties. A short-term disability is referred to as one that lasts for no more than two years, while “long-term” refers to a disability that lasts for many more years or even for life. Generally speaking this insurance only applies up to age 65 as after this time you should be able to access social security benefits.

Disability coverage will usually replace 50%-70% of the income you earn in your normal occupation. Some policies also offer residual benefits if you are able to continue working on a part-time basis. It’s a good idea to purchase a policy that offers a cost of living adjustment in benefits to keep up with the effects of inflation. Other features to look for include “return of premium” for a partial refund if you have made no claims within a specified time period and “waiver of premium” provision, which means you do not have to pay premiums if you are disabled for a period of 90 days.

To find an appropriate disability insurance policy you could contact our insurance agency in Texas; our agents can assist you with disability and any other insurance you might be looking for.
